Crypto protocols bleed $35 million in rapid-fire bridge attacks

Hackers just gave the industry a brutal lesson in why underlying math doesn't matter if the keys are weak. In a span of just a few hours, attackers drained $35 million from cross-chain systems including Verus and B² Network. These weren't sophisticated cryptographic breakthroughs. Instead, the attackers exploited compromised private keys, manipulated protocol upgrade powers, and bypassed hollow validation checks to walk away with the loot. The blitz targeted specific vulnerabilities in how these Bitcoin and Ethereum-linked systems bridge assets between chains. While the core code of the networks remains intact, the layer of human management and smart contract permissions proved to be the literal million-dollar weakness. Security teams are now scrambling to patch the holes, but the damage to these specific treasuries is already done. Cross-chain security remains the biggest target on the map for 2024. Can developers actually secure these bridges, or is the complexity simply creating too many doors for thieves to kick down?
