Term Finance hit for $8.5 million in governance token raid

Ethereum lending protocol Term Finance just learned a brutal lesson in decentralized security. An attacker drained $8.5 million from the platform after realizing they could simply buy their way into the driver’s seat. By scooping up a massive amount of the protocol’s lightly traded governance tokens, the exploiter gained enough voting power to greenlight their own malicious proposal. It's a classic case of a cheap keys opening a very expensive vault. The attacker essentially paid a fraction of the total loot to seize control, proving that low liquidity in voting tokens is a glowing target for hackers. Term Finance developers haven't recovered the funds yet, but the breach highlights a systemic flaw in how young protocols distribute power. If the cost of a majority vote is lower than the value of the treasury, the math will always favor the thief. Will this force a shift away from pure token-weighted voting?
